Outlook Calendar and Task reminders do not appear as expected

SYMPTOMS

Your Outlook Calendar or Task reminders may not appear at the scheduled time. Also, you may receive the following message when you click Save and Close for a new appointment with a reminder:
The reminder for <subject> may not appear because the item is not in your Calendar or Tasks folder. Is this OK?

CAUSE

The following are four common causes for this behavior:
  • Microsoft Outlook is not running. Unlike Microsoft Schedule+, which has a separate file to handle reminders, the main Outlook program controls the reminders. If Outlook is not running, reminders do not display.
  • The Calendar or Task reminder is not in your primary folder. Reminders only trigger from within the primary Calendar or Task folders. Primary folders reside where you receive messages. When you set up an e-mail service, you designate either your mailbox Inbox or your personal folders (.pst) file Inbox as the mail delivery point.

For example, if you receive messages in your personal folders (.pst) file Inbox and you create an appointment reminder in your mailbox Calendar, the reminder does not display. If you create the same reminder in your Personal Folders Calendar, the reminder does display at the appropriate time.

Note Reminders trigger from other Calendar and Task folders in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.
  • The Delivery option of your e-mail service is set to "None" (without quotation marks). You must specify a default delivery location for reminders to be processed.
  • The Reminders folder is damaged or contains corrupt reminder items.

RESOLUTION

Use one of the following to work around this behavior:
  • If Outlook is not running, start Outlook, and keep Outlook running to receive reminders.
  • When you create reminders, verify that they are saved in your primary Calendar or Task folder.
  • Exit Outlook, click Start, point to Run, type outlook /cleanreminders, and then clickOK.
  • Exit Outlook, click Start, point to Run, type outlook /resetfolders, and click OK. Use this method if the /cleanreminders switch does not resolve the problem.

How to change the Volume Licensing product key on Windows XP

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756  How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
If you only have a few volume licensing product keys to change, you can use the Activation Wizard.

Note We recommend that you run System Restore to create a new restore point before you follow these steps.
Deactivate Windows
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents
  4. In the topic pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.
  5. Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.
Reactivate Windows and add new product key
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.
    %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
  3. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next.
  4. Click Change Product key.
  5. Type the new product key in the New key boxes, and then click Update.

If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later, and then restart the computer.
  6. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to verify that Windows is activated. You receive the following message:
Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Install Windows XP Service Pack 1a or a later version of Windows XP.
If you cannot restart Windows after you install Windows XP SP1 or a later version of Windows XP, try the following steps:
  1. Restart your computer and start pressing F8 until you see the Windows Advanced Options menu.
  2. Select Last Known Good Configuration from the menu and press ENTER. This option starts Windows by using a previous good configuration.
  3. Repeat steps 1 through 8 under "Reactivate Windows and add new product key."
If you can install SP1 or a later version of Windows XP and you can restart Windows, you have resolved the issue. If the issue has not been resolved, try method 2 or see the "Next Steps" section for more troubleshooting resources.

Method 2: Use a script

If you must change the product key for multiple computers, we recommend this method. You can create a WMI script that changes the volume licensing product key, and then deploy this script in a startup script.

The sample ChangeVLKey2600.vbs script and the sample ChangeVLKeySP1 script that are described in this section use the new volume licensing key that you want to enter as a single argument. It is in a five-part alphanumeric form.

We recommend that you use the ChangeVLKey2600.vbs script on Windows XP-based computers that are not running Windows XP SP1 and later versions of Windows XP and that you use the ChangeVLKeySP1.vbs script on Windows XP-based computers that are running Windows XP SP1 and later versions of Windows XP. These scripts perform the following functions:
  • They remove the hyphen characters (-) from the five-part alphanumeric product key.
  • They create an instance of the win32_WindowsProductActivation class.
  • They call the SetProductKey method with the new volume licensing product key.
You can create a batch file or a cmd file that uses either of the following sample scripts, together with the new product key as an argument. You can deploy it as part of a startup script or run it from the command line to change the product key on a single computer.
Examples

How to Delegate Management of Distribution Group Membership to a User

In Exchange 2007, the behavior of the Managed By property is different than in previous versions of Exchange. This property is an informational field that users see in Microsoft Office Outlook when viewing the properties of the distribution group. This property does not provide the user who is identified in the Managed By property with the ability to modify the members of that distribution group in Outlook. If you want to provide a user with the ability to modify distribution group membership, you must explicitly grant the required Active Directory directory service permissions by using the Add-ADPermission cmdlet. Specifically, this allows the user to modify the Member property of the distribution group.

To perform this procedure, the account you use must be delegated the following:
  • Exchange Recipient Administrator role
  • Account Operator role for the applicable Active Directory containers
For more information about permissions, delegating roles, and the rights that are required to administer Exchange Server 2007, see Permission Considerations.

·         Run the following command:
Add-ADPermission -Identity -User -AccessRights WriteProperty -Properties "Member"
For example, to grant John Smith the right to add members to the Marketing Department distribution group, run the following command:
Add-ADPermission -Identity "Marketing Department" -User "John Smith" -AccessRights WriteProperty -Properties "Member"
